# Domains and subdomains

> How to set up a project for a site with several subdomains, which website to enter, and where Promptwatch counts a subdomain as your own site.

A project tracks one brand and has one website. Promptwatch measures the brand by its name in AI answers, and uses the website to decide which cited pages, crawls and clicks are yours. Subdomains such as "docs.example.com" or "shop.example.com" count as your site in some places and as a separate domain in others, so this page explains how to set up a site with subdomains and lists where the difference shows up.

### One project for your main domain and its subdomains

If your subdomains belong to the same brand, for example product groups, docs, support or a blog, keep them all in one project and enter the main domain, like "example.com", as the website. Splitting them into a project per subdomain doesn't give you a combined view: each project keeps its own data, runs its own prompts against your response limit, and counts toward your plan's project limit.

One project already gives you the overall picture:

* **Brand metrics cover every subdomain**: [visibility](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/visibility-score.md), [share of voice](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/share-of-voice.md), sentiment and position are based on your brand being mentioned in AI answers, not on which domain gets cited, so they measure the whole brand no matter which subdomain a cited page sits on.
* **Product groups go in topics, not monitors or projects**: a monitor is one market, meaning one country and one language. To compare product groups, give each prompt a topic per product group, such as "Cables" or "Connectors", and filter your charts by topic. See [organizing with monitors, tags and topics](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/organizing-your-setup.md).
* **Each subdomain shows up in citations**: in the domain list in [citations](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/understanding-sources.md), every subdomain is its own row, so you can see how often AI models cite "docs.example.com" next to "example.com".
* **Subdomain pages go in the Page Tracker**: the [Page Tracker](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/page-tracker.md) takes any URL, on any domain or subdomain, and its domain filter narrows the table to one subdomain at a time.
* **Turn on subdomains for sitemap sync**: by default only the main host and its www version are synced. The switch **Allow different subdomains in sitemap sync** adds pages from your other subdomains. See [how to change your sitemap](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/change-sitemap.md).

### When a separate project makes sense

Create a separate project only when a subdomain is a separate brand: its own name, its own competitors, its own audience. Promptwatch matches answers on the brand name, so two projects for the same brand track the same mentions twice.

Country domains follow the same rule. Markets and languages are handled by [monitors](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/what-is-a-monitor.md) inside one project, not by extra projects. Keep in mind that a project has one website, so in a project for "example.com", citations of "example.de" are not counted as your own site.

### Which website to enter

The **Website URL** you enter when you [create your project](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/create-your-project.md) is the website Promptwatch treats as yours. You can change it later in the Brand Book; see [your brand profile](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/brand-profile.md).

* **Enter the main domain**: "example.com" is the right choice for most brands, because the features that include subdomains then cover all of them.
* **www doesn't matter**: "[www.example.com](http://www.example.com)" and "example.com" are the same site everywhere in Promptwatch.
* **A subdomain also works**: if the brand only lives on "shop.example.com", you can enter that. Promptwatch then treats that subdomain as your site, and the main domain does not count as yours.
* **A path does not narrow your site down**: you can enter "example.com/nl", but citation rank, offsite mentions and the Self Citations filter still treat all of "example.com" as your site. To focus on one country, use a [monitor](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/what-is-a-monitor.md) for that market instead.

### Where a subdomain counts as your site

The rules differ per feature. For a project with "example.com" as its website:

* **Brand metrics**: subdomains don't matter. Visibility, share of voice and sentiment come from brand mentions, not from cited domains.
* **[Citation rank](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/citation-rank.md)**: subdomains included. A citation of "docs.example.com" counts toward your citation rank.
* **Citations domain list**: each subdomain is its own row. The row for your own domain only covers "example.com", which is why the [self-citation rate](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/self-citation-rate.md) shown there leaves out subdomains.
* **Self Citations filter on Responses**: the **Has self-citation** option under the **Citations** filter only matches citations of "example.com", not of its subdomains.
* **[Offsite mentions](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/offsite-mentions.md)**: subdomains are treated as your own site and left out, so the list only shows third-party pages.
* **Page Tracker**: you can track pages on any subdomain, and their citation counts work as usual. The **Citation Clicks** and **Citation Crawls** columns only fill in for pages on "example.com" itself; pages on a subdomain show "-" there.
* **Sitemap sync**: only "example.com" and "[www.example.com](http://www.example.com)", unless **Allow different subdomains in sitemap sync** is on. A sitemap file itself may live on any subdomain of the same root domain.
* **[Google Search Console](https://promptwatch.com/docs/academy/google-search-console.md)**: a domain property, like "sc-domain:example.com", covers the domain and all its subdomains. A URL-prefix property has to match your website's host, so "[https://shop.example.com/](https://shop.example.com/)" does not cover an "example.com" project.

### How to see whether your domain and subdomains work together

To judge how the main domain and its subdomains perform together in AI answers, read three views in the same project:

1. Your brand's visibility and share of voice, filtered by topic, to see which product groups the AI models recommend you for.
2. The citations domain list, to see which subdomains the models actually use as sources for those answers.
3. The Page Tracker, filtered by domain, to see which pages on each subdomain get cited and for which prompts.

A product group with good visibility but no citations of its subdomain usually means the models know the brand but don't use that subdomain's content, which makes those pages the place to improve.
