Perplexity is an AI-powered answer engine that runs a live web search for each question and writes a synthesized answer with numbered citations linking to its sources. Founded in 2022 and led by CEO Aravind Srinivas, it was one of the first consumer products built around cited AI answers rather than a list of links, and it has since expanded into a browser (Comet) and agent products.
Scale figures come mostly from the company and press reports. Srinivas said at Bloomberg Tech in June 2025 that Perplexity handled about 780 million queries in May 2025, growing more than 20% month over month. TechCrunch reported in September 2025, citing The Information, that Perplexity raised $200 million at a $20 billion valuation. Plans include a free tier, Pro at $20 per month and Max at $200 per month.
The product has several layers that matter for visibility:
- Search answers. The default mode retrieves pages in real time and cites them inline. Users can switch the underlying model, and paid plans offer frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google alongside Perplexity's own.
- Deep Research. A longer mode that runs many searches and returns a cited report.
- Model Council. Launched on February 5, 2026 for Max subscribers, it sends one question to three frontier models in parallel and has a separate model synthesize where they agree and differ (Perplexity).
- Computer. Launched on February 25, 2026, an agent system that breaks a task into subtasks and delegates them to different models.
- Comet. Perplexity's Chromium-based browser with a built-in assistant, free since October 2025 and on iOS since March 2026.
Distribution extends beyond its own apps: Samsung's Galaxy S26, announced in February 2026, ships with Perplexity preloaded, and Perplexity's APIs power real-time search in Bixby.
Perplexity publishes two web agents in its crawler documentation. PerplexityBot crawls to surface and link pages in Perplexity search results and, according to Perplexity, is not used to train foundation models. Perplexity-User fetches pages when a user's question needs them and generally ignores robots.txt because the request is user-initiated. Perplexity's relationship with publishers remains contested: Reddit sued Perplexity and several data providers in October 2025 for scraping Reddit content through Google results, and in July 2026 a federal judge allowed the core claims to proceed.
For GEO, Perplexity is the platform where citations are easiest to observe. Every answer shows its sources, so you can see exactly which of your pages were used, how high they rank among the sources and which competitors appear beside you. Because it searches live for each question, a page that is newly published or updated can be cited within days if PerplexityBot can reach it. Perplexity also splits questions into sub-queries (query fan-out), so focused pages that answer one sub-question well often outperform broad overviews.
Perplexity's source mix differs from other engines. In our October 2026 data on social media citations by AI model, 2.7% of Perplexity's citations came from social platforms, with LinkedIn and Reddit tied at 0.86% each, compared with 0.46% for ChatGPT. Track Perplexity separately from ChatGPT and Google, check that PerplexityBot receives 200 responses on key pages, and treat AI-referred traffic from perplexity.ai as its own channel in analytics.
Examples of Perplexity AI
- A cybersecurity vendor publishes a dated ransomware statistics page and sees it cited in Perplexity answers about ransomware trends within a week of PerplexityBot first fetching it.
- A product marketer runs the same 'best expense management software' question in Perplexity's default mode and in Model Council and finds that two of the three models leave her brand out, which points to weak third-party coverage.
- An analyst uses Perplexity Deep Research for a market overview and checks every cited source in the report before sharing it with a client.
- A SaaS company's crawler logs show PerplexityBot receiving 403 responses from a WAF rule, which explains why its documentation has stopped appearing in Perplexity citations.
