AI search insights are the specific, actionable findings a team draws from AI search analytics: why a brand is absent from certain AI answers, which sources the models rely on instead, how competitors are positioned, and which content or outreach change is most likely to move the numbers. Analytics is the data; insights are the conclusions that lead to work.
A metric on its own rarely tells you what to do. A visibility score of 18 out of 100 on Perplexity is a fact. The insight is the reason behind it, for example that Perplexity answers in your category cite three review sites where your product has no listing, while ChatGPT cites your own comparison pages. Getting from one to the other usually means reading responses and sources, not just charts.
The insights GEO teams look for fall into recurring patterns:
- Coverage gaps: prompts where competitors are mentioned and you are not. These are the clearest targets, and the cited sources on those answers show what you would need to publish or influence. See content gap analysis.
- Prominence problems: you appear, but late in the list or as a passing mention, which shows up as a low visibility score despite decent share of voice.
- Source dependence: answers about you are built from third-party pages, such as Reddit threads, review sites or old press coverage, rather than your own content. An AI citation source audit finds these.
- Platform splits: strong on one engine, absent on another, often traced to a blocked crawler, a missing index entry or a platform's preference for certain source types.
- Narrative issues: answers that describe you inaccurately, with outdated pricing or a discontinued feature, or with negative framing. Sentiment monitoring and fact-checking responses surface these.
- Retrieval clues: the sub-queries a model ran while answering, visible in some engines as query fan-outs, show what the model looked for and which of your pages could have matched.
Good insights connect several data sources. Crawler logs can explain a citation gap; Search Console data can show whether a topic has real search demand; referral and conversion data show whether winning a prompt is worth the effort. Promptwatch's 360 dashboard, for example, places Search Console and Bing Webmaster data next to AI crawls and citations per page so these comparisons can be made in one view; our post on search insights for Google and Bing describes it.
To keep insights useful, tie each one to a decision and an owner. 'Our share of voice dropped' is an observation. 'A competitor's new benchmark report is now cited on 12 of our 40 buying prompts, so we will publish our own test data and pitch it to the two review sites the models cite most' is an insight with a next step. Recheck after the change ships, since AI answers can take weeks to reflect new or updated content. Our rundown of AI search visibility KPIs lists the metrics most insights are built on.
Examples of AI Search Insights
- A project management vendor reads 30 Perplexity answers where it is missing and finds 22 cite the same two G2 category pages, where it has fewer than 50 reviews; a review campaign becomes the quarter's top action.
- A fintech team sees ChatGPT still describes its old pricing in a third of answers and traces the claim to a 2024 comparison article that ranks well, then asks the publisher for an update.
- A travel site compares query fan-outs and notices ChatGPT searches for 'pet policy' and 'cancellation fee' on hotel prompts, two topics its hotel pages do not cover.
- An agency spots that a client's visibility on Google AI Mode fell after the May 2026 core update while ChatGPT held steady, and narrows the investigation to the client's Google rankings.
