What is upday?

Publishers enter upday through an approved feed integration. The news app asks each source for an active RSS or Atom feed, then reads the articles and metadata needed to keep that source current. The crawler handling those requests identifies itself with the upday token.

The service combines editorial and automatic selection. Editors choose stories for Top News, while My News uses a reader's selected interests and reading behavior to select articles. Publisher feeds can provide the headline, description, author, and image. If that information is missing, upday asks for Open Graph metadata on the article page.

upday says its cards contain an image, title, and short description rather than the full article. A reader who selects the card is sent to the publisher's site. In logs, the integration may therefore appear as requests for the feed, listed article pages, and their card images.

Personalized recommendation does not make this a model-training or generative-search crawler. upday documents an article-selection system for its own news app, with no stated use for language-model training. Blocking it affects distribution and referrals inside upday, not general AI-search eligibility.

Indirectly relevant

Is upday relevant for AI search?

Indirectly. upday has no AI product of its own, but its output can end up in the systems that AI answers draw on.

upday collects content from many sites and redistributes it through its own product. Aggregated copies can end up in datasets that AI systems later learn from, and some aggregators are themselves sources that AI answer engines draw on.

How to handle upday

An active publisher should keep its feed, public article pages, and required images open to upday. Put subscriber-only or private sections behind normal access controls, and use narrow path rules if those areas share the same host.

upday's publisher documentation explicitly refers to robots.txt, so this rule can stop the crawler site-wide:

User-agent: upday
Disallow: /

That rule conflicts with the technical requirements for inclusion. It can prevent new stories or metadata from being integrated. If the publisher is leaving upday, end the feed relationship too instead of continuing to advertise URLs that the crawler cannot retrieve.

Examples

  • A local newspaper exposes a category-specific Atom feed and complete Open Graph tags, allowing upday to build accurate cards that link back to each story.
  • A magazine leaves its free-news feed accessible to `upday` while excluding the separate members area with authentication and a narrow path rule.
