What Type of Content Does Google AI Overviews Cite the Most?
What Type of Content Gets Cited by
AI Overviews?
Based on Promptwatch data from Jan 1 - Feb 4, 2026. Covers 5,623,382 classified citations. The chart shows the percentage breakdown of citation content types per day. Only citations with a classified content type are included.
What this means for you
Google AI Overviews has a clear favorite: listicles average about 27% of all cited content, nearly double the runner-up, news articles at ~16%. How-to guides are third at ~12%. Structured, scannable formats that already answer "what are the best…" and "how do I…" questions are exactly what Google pulls into its AI answers.
Unlike ChatGPT's more volatile citation mix, this distribution is remarkably stable: over the full five-week window, no major format moved by more than a point or two. For AI Overviews, format preferences look structural rather than trend-driven.
How to act on it
- If AI Overviews visibility is your goal, make listicles a core format: curated "top X" and "best tools/products for Y" pages are cited nearly twice as often as any other content type.
- Back them up with step-by-step how-to guides. At ~12% of citations they're the strongest non-list editorial format, and they map directly onto the question-style queries that trigger AI Overviews.
- Because this mix barely moves week to week, invest in evergreen list and guide content you refresh quarterly, rather than chasing short-lived format experiments.
