What this means for you

Listicles lost the top spot in Google AI Overviews for the first time. They still lead the July average at about 18% of daily citations, with product pages at 16.4% and how-tos at 15.1%. But from July 28 on, product pages were the most cited format every day, and they ended the month at 17.9% against 16.2% for listicles.

ChatGPT shows the same pattern, so this looks less like a Google quirk and more like AI search as a whole warming to brand-owned commercial pages. Listicles averaged about 26% in Q1 and are at 18% now. Product pages were around 9% in January and have nearly doubled since. Video reached almost 6.3% by the end of July, how-tos stayed near 15%, and news slipped to about 13.5%.

How to act on it

  • Give your product pages the same AI Overviews attention you give editorial content: they just became Google's most cited format, so structured specs, clear pricing, and fresh availability data now earn citations directly.
  • Keep list-format content in the mix, but don't rely on it alone. Listicles still average the highest share across the month, yet their lead is shrinking for the first time since we started tracking.
  • Continue investing in video: its citation share keeps climbing (over 6% by late July, up from ~2.7% in January), and most brands still have no video assets competing for those slots.
