What this means for you
April is a changing of the guard: Reddit tops the chart at 4.14% of all ChatGPT Search citations, roughly 3.6 times Wikipedia's 1.15%. For the first time this year, community threads outrank the encyclopedia as ChatGPT's single most-cited source.
Just behind, Walmart and TechRadar are tied at 0.71% apiece, a sign that product listings and hands-on reviews carry real weight in shopping and comparison answers. Yet even the #1 domain holds barely 4% of citations. The bulk still flows to a long tail of niche sites.
How to act on it
- Make Reddit a first-class channel, not an afterthought: identify the subreddits where your category gets discussed, answer questions with genuine expertise, and monitor how your brand comes up in those threads.
- Learn from Walmart and TechRadar sharing third place: structured product listings and in-depth expert reviews both earn citations. If you sell products, make specs and pricing crawlable; if you publish, go deep rather than broad.
- Keep writing for the long tail. Everything below the top four sits under 0.35%, so specific, well-organized answers to the exact questions your customers ask remain the most accessible way onto ChatGPT's source list.

What this means for you
This is the most dramatic reshuffle of the year so far: Wikipedia collapsed from 3.61% in March to 1.15% in April, a loss of over two-thirds of its citation share, while Reddit rose from 3.21% to 4.14% and took over the #1 spot. The commerce-and-reviews tier surged too: Walmart more than doubled from 0.31% to 0.71% and TechRadar jumped from 0.46% to 0.71%. A single model or retrieval update can rewrite which sources ChatGPT trusts almost overnight, so treat citation share as a moving target.
How to act on it
- Never anchor your GEO strategy to last quarter's winners: Wikipedia shed two-thirds of its share in four weeks. Re-measure which domains ChatGPT cites in your category every month and reallocate effort accordingly.
- Ride the shift toward community and commerce: strengthen your Reddit footprint while it's gaining, and give retail and comparison pages the structured, spec-level detail that helped Walmart more than double its share.
- If your visibility leaned on the fallers (LinkedIn slid from 0.25% to 0.18% and Alibaba from 0.16% to 0.06%), diversify now across owned content, reviews, and community channels rather than waiting for further declines.
