ChatGPT Citation Share - January 2026
The Most Cited Domains on
ChatGPT in January 2026
Based on Promptwatch data from Jan 1 - Jan 31, 2026. Citations tracked from real prompt responses using ChatGPT Search when triggered in the UI.
What this means for you
In January, ChatGPT Search has two clear reference points: Wikipedia at 3.63% of all citations and Reddit at 2.58%. Together they collect 6.2% of citations, nearly double what the other 19 tracked domains manage combined (about 3.3%). ChatGPT's trust is split between encyclopedic authority and community discussion.
Below those two, the field flattens out fast: no other domain reaches even 0.4%, with LinkedIn (0.39%), Forbes (0.33%), and TechRadar (0.31%) leading a tightly packed chasing group. That means the overwhelming majority of citations flow to a long tail of smaller, specialized sites, which is good news if you don't run a household-name domain.
How to act on it
- Invest in the two channels ChatGPT already trusts: keep any Wikipedia articles about your company or category accurate and well-sourced, and become a genuine participant in the subreddits where your customers ask questions.
- Compete in the long tail. With 19 of the 21 tracked domains sitting below 0.4%, a well-structured, factual page on your own site has a realistic chance of being cited for the specific prompts your buyers actually type.
- Treat January as your baseline: record your citation share for the prompts that matter to you now, so you can measure whether your GEO work moves the needle in the months ahead.
