What Type of Content Gets Cited by
ChatGPT Search in August 2026?
Based on classified Promptwatch citations from Aug 1 - Aug 31, 2026. The chart shows the percentage breakdown of citation content types per day. Only citations with a classified content type are included.
What this means for you
Product pages are still the format ChatGPT Search cites most, at about 29% of daily citations on average in August. But the steady climb we saw through July has stopped. They held around 30% until August 22, then dropped to about 25% for the rest of the month. Landing pages fell harder, from about 20% in the first week to under 12% at the end.
The share they lost went to informational content. How-tos rose from 4.3% in the first week to 9.1% over the last nine days, and documentation went from 3.3% to 8.2%. Comparisons, news, and FAQs all gained a point or more, and listicles ended the month at 11%. Social posts went the other way: they fell from 4.4% to under 1% after August 14, the same day Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations collapsed.
How to act on it
- Put how-to guides back on the roadmap. They more than doubled in August, from about 4% of citations in the first week to around 10% at the end of the month, and now sit level with listicles.
- Keep product pages citation-ready, but stop assuming they will keep taking share. They are still the most cited format, yet they gave back about five points in the last week of August.
- Don't count on social posts to get you into ChatGPT for now. Their share fell from over 4% to well under 1% in mid-August, so put that effort into your own guides, comparison pages, and documentation.
