What Type of Content Does ChatGPT Cite the Most? - July 2026
What Type of Content Gets Cited by
ChatGPT Search in July 2026?
Based on classified Promptwatch citations from Jul 1 - Jul 31, 2026. The chart shows the percentage breakdown of citation content types per day. Only citations with a classified content type are included.
What this means for you
Product pages are now the format ChatGPT Search cites most, and it isn't close: about 33% of daily citations in July, versus roughly 10% for listicles and 5% for news. Back in March they averaged about 18%, so their share has nearly doubled in four months. If you sell something, ChatGPT is increasingly willing to cite your own commercial pages directly rather than third-party articles about you.
Inside the month, listicles grew the most, from about 8% of citations on July 1 to over 10% at the end. How-tos went from 3.3% to 4.3%, social posts from 3.5% to 4.6%, and comparison pages from 2.5% to 3.2%. News barely moved from 5%. Most of those gains came out of product and landing pages.
How to act on it
- Treat your product pages as citation assets as well as conversion pages: with roughly a third of all ChatGPT citations now going to product pages, structured specs, transparent pricing, and up-to-date availability give ChatGPT concrete facts worth quoting.
- Invest in listicle placements and your own roundup content. Listicles were the fastest-growing format in July, and inclusion in third-party "best of" roundups remains one of the most reliable routes into ChatGPT answers.
- Keep comparison pages ("X vs Y") and how-to guides on your roadmap: both grew steadily through July, and competition for those citations is still relatively low.
