What Is the Half-Life of Content in ChatGPT?
How Long Does ChatGPT Keep Citing a Page?
Based on every classified page ChatGPT cited on July 6 (day 0), tracked from Jul 6 - Oct 4, 2026. Each line shows the share of those pages that ChatGPT still cited on that day or later. A content type reaches its half-life where its line crosses 50%. The lines drop faster in the last week because there are fewer days left for a page to be cited again.
Landing pages and docs stay cited longest, news loses half its pages in five weeks
Landing pages and documentation hold up best. After 30 days, ChatGPT still cited 78% of the landing pages and 76% of the docs from day 0, and after 60 days 69% and 67%. Comparisons follow at 72% after 30 days and 63% after 60. Docs also have the smallest drop after day 0: ChatGPT cited 93% of them again later, against 77% of news pages.
Product pages decay faster than you might expect. After 60 days, 55% are still cited, level with reviews and how-to guides, and all three reach their half-life after 74 to 77 days. Pricing pages are classified as landing or product pages. Listicles hold up better than product pages, with 60% still cited after 60 days.
News decays fastest. Almost a quarter of news pages are never cited again after day 0, half are gone after 36 days, and by day 60 ChatGPT still cites 41% of them.
Landing pages, docs, comparisons, and listicles only cross 50% in the last week, where every line drops because the window ends. Their half-life is likely close to or beyond 90 days.
What to change in your content plan
- Treat your landing pages, docs, and pricing pages as long-term citation assets. ChatGPT keeps citing most of them for months, so keep prices, features, and positioning on them accurate.
- Don't assume product pages stay cited on their own. They lose citations about as fast as how-to guides, so keep specs, availability, and prices current.
- Put lasting effort into comparison pages and listicles. Both keep more than 60% of their citations after two months.
- Use news and press coverage for short bursts of visibility. Half of all news pages drop out of ChatGPT's citations within about five weeks.
