How Many Unique Domains Does ChatGPT Cite per Response?
Unique domains cited per ChatGPT response
Based on ChatGPT responses with at least one citation from Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026. Each bar is the share of responses that cite that many different domains. Several URLs from the same domain count once, and the last bar groups responses citing 10 or more domains.
Almost half of ChatGPT answers cite 10 or more domains
ChatGPT rarely relies on a handful of sources. Almost half of all responses with citations (47.6%) cite 10 or more different domains, and two out of three (66.1%) cite at least 8.
Answers built on very few sites are the exception. Only 6% of responses cite three domains or fewer, and just 1% cite a single domain. The share climbs with every extra domain from 1 to 9, so being cited usually means sharing the answer with many other websites.
The prompt type makes a big difference. Organic and competitor comparison prompts both cite 10 or more domains in about half of responses, while brand-specific prompts do so in only 21.3%. The sections below break this down per prompt type.
Compete for a crowded answer
- Plan on sharing every answer. Track where you appear in the response and how ChatGPT describes you, not just whether you're cited at all.
- Check which competitors are cited in the same responses as you. With ten or more domains in a typical answer, you're rarely the only option the reader sees.
- Earn mentions on third-party sites such as reviews, listicles, and forums. Because ChatGPT pulls from so many domains per answer, those pages give your brand extra chances to show up in the same response.
Unique domains cited per organic prompt
Organic prompts are general questions that don't name a brand, such as "best project management software for small teams". Based on ChatGPT responses with at least one citation from Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026. Each bar is the share of these responses that cite that many different domains.
Organic answers are the most crowded
Organic prompts produce the most crowded answers of the three prompt types. More than half of these responses (52.5%) cite 10 or more different domains, and 71.8% cite at least 8. Only 4.5% cite three domains or fewer. When people ask a general question without naming a brand, ChatGPT draws on a wide range of sites, and no single site carries the answer.
Win a spot among many sources
- Cover the general questions your buyers ask before they know your brand. These answers have the most room for new sources.
- Get your brand onto the listicles, reviews, and comparison pages ChatGPT cites for these questions. With 10 or more domains per answer, third-party pages are often how you get in.
- Measure your citations across many organic prompts, not just one. With this many sources per answer, a single prompt tells you little.
Unique domains cited per brand-specific prompt
Brand-specific prompts ask about one named brand, such as "is Asana good for small teams". Based on ChatGPT responses with at least one citation from Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026. Each bar is the share of these responses that cite that many different domains.
Brand questions draw on far fewer sites
When a prompt names one brand, ChatGPT narrows its sources. Five domains is the most common count, at 14.9% of responses, and 40.7% cite five domains or fewer. Only 21.3% cite 10 or more domains, less than half the share for organic prompts. And 13.8% cite three domains or fewer, about three times the organic share.
Own the sources about your brand
- Make sure your own site answers what people ask about your brand: pricing, features, reviews, and alternatives. With fewer sources in the answer, each one has more say in what ChatGPT tells them.
- Check which other domains ChatGPT cites for prompts about your brand. The review sites and forums on that short list shape how it describes you.
- Run the same kind of prompts for your competitors to see which sources ChatGPT relies on when it describes them.
Unique domains cited per competitor comparison prompt
Competitor comparison prompts put two or more brands side by side, such as "Asana vs Monday.com". Based on ChatGPT responses with at least one citation from Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026. Each bar is the share of these responses that cite that many different domains.
Comparison answers cite almost as many domains as organic ones
Naming two or more brands doesn't narrow the sources the way naming one brand does. 49.1% of comparison responses cite 10 or more domains, and 66.5% cite at least 8, close to the organic numbers. Only 0.35% cite a single domain, the lowest of all three prompt types, so ChatGPT almost never settles a comparison with one site.
Shape how you're compared
- Publish your own comparison pages for the competitors you're most often compared with. They give ChatGPT a source that explains your side.
- Find the third-party comparison and review pages ChatGPT cites for these prompts, and make sure they describe your brand accurately.
- Expect your competitor's site to be cited next to yours. Spell out your differences clearly on your own pages so they're easy to quote.
