How Has the Claude Citation Crawler Grown Over Time?

When someone asks Claude a question or uses Claude Code, Anthropic's Claude Citation crawler may visit the cited web pages. This report tracks that crawler's daily share of all tracked AI citation crawler traffic, so you can see exactly how Claude emerged as a citation crawler from December 2025 through April 2026.

What this means for you

Claude's citation crawler went from roughly 30 visits a day (about 0.04% of all tracked AI citation crawler traffic) in mid-December 2025 to several thousand a day by mid-April 2026, peaking at 1.73% share on April 13. In absolute terms that is a more than 100x increase in four months: a genuinely new source of AI citation traffic, not noise.

The inflection points cluster around late March, when daily visits jumped from the hundreds into the thousands within two weeks. If Claude and Claude Code keep gaining users, this crawler's footprint on your site will grow whether or not you do anything. The question is whether it can reach your pages when it arrives.

How to act on it

  • Check that Anthropic's crawlers (Claude-User, ClaudeBot) aren't blocked in your robots.txt or by CDN/WAF bot rules. A block that was harmless in December now silently excludes you from a citation channel that's growing every month.
  • Search your server or CDN logs for Anthropic user agents to establish a baseline of how often Claude fetches your pages, then review it monthly. The growth curve here suggests your own numbers will keep moving.
  • Keep perspective on volume: Claude is still around 1% of tracked citation crawler traffic, with ChatGPT dominating the rest. Treat it as a fast-growing secondary channel to unblock and monitor, not the place to focus your optimization budget yet.
