What this means for you
YouTube tops Google AI Mode's citation mix in February at 1.88%, followed by Reddit at 1.41%, with LinkedIn (0.86%), Google's own properties (0.79%), and Facebook (0.77%) clustered behind. The top of the list is dominated by video and social platforms rather than editorial publishers. The highest-ranked traditional content site, Medium, sits at just 0.38%.
The distribution is strikingly flat: no domain reaches even 2%. Because AI Mode fans each question out into multiple sub-searches across Google's entire index, citations scatter across a huge long tail of specialist sites. That is a very different picture from classic Google rankings, and it means niche domains can realistically earn citations.
How to act on it
- Keep your classic Google SEO in shape. AI Mode retrieves from Google's index via query fan-out, so pages that don't rank (or aren't indexed) can't be cited in the first place.
- Invest in video: with YouTube at 1.88%, more than double LinkedIn's 0.86%, publishing walkthroughs, reviews, and explainers on YouTube is one of the most reliable ways to appear in AI Mode answers.
- Don't write off your own site. When even the #1 domain holds under 2%, the overwhelming majority of citations flow to the long tail: specific, well-structured pages that directly answer the questions your buyers ask.
