Google AI Mode Citation Share - June 2026
The Most Cited Domains on
AI Mode in June 2026
Based on Promptwatch data from Jun 1 - Jun 27, 2026 (month-to-date). Citations tracked from real prompt responses using Google AI Mode.
What this means for you
In June, google.com reaches 7.31% of all Google AI Mode citations, more than YouTube (2.88%) and Reddit (2.52%) combined. Counting YouTube, Google-owned properties now capture over 10% of the citation mix: AI Mode routinely resolves questions with Google's own Maps listings, Business Profiles, and support content before reaching for the open web.
That self-preference is unique among AI answer engines: in ChatGPT's June data, Reddit leads and google.com is nowhere near the top. Below the big three, everything drops under 1%, so the open-web opportunity on AI Mode lives almost entirely in the long tail.
How to act on it
- Optimize every Google-owned surface you control: Business Profile, Maps, Merchant Center, and a maintained YouTube channel. With google.com plus YouTube taking over 10% of citations, these are now direct GEO channels rather than side projects.
- Reddit at 2.52% remains the biggest citation source Google doesn't own; a genuine, sustained presence in the subreddits where your category gets discussed is the clearest external lever this month.
- Since no independent website in this list clears 1%, compete on precision: publish tightly scoped pages that fully answer one question each, and track monthly whether AI Mode starts pulling them into its fan-out.
AI Mode Citation Share
May vs June 2026
Side-by-side comparison of citation share for the top domains on Google AI Mode between May and June 2026 (June is month-to-date).
What this means for you
Google's self-citation keeps accelerating: google.com climbed from 4.24% in May to 7.31% in June (month-to-date), up 72% on top of last month's sixfold jump. YouTube cooled from 3.42% to 2.88%, its first decline in this series, while community and social sources quietly gained: Reddit rose from 2.36% to 2.52%, Instagram from 0.57% to 0.68%, and Quora from 0.12% to 0.18%. The gap between Google's own properties and everyone else is widening month over month.
How to act on it
- Recalculate your channel priorities against the self-citation trend: two consecutive months of google.com gains mean your Google Business Profile and Maps data deserve the same care as your best landing pages.
- Lean into the UGC risers: Instagram (+19%) and Quora (+50% off a small base) both gained alongside Reddit. If your audience asks questions on those platforms, authoritative answers there are cheap citations.
- Don't abandon YouTube over one soft month; at 2.88% it is still the #2 source. But watch the July data before committing next quarter's video budget, since June is month-to-date and the dip may deepen or reverse.
