Google AI Mode Citation Share - May 2026
The Most Cited Domains on
AI Mode in May 2026
Based on Promptwatch data from May 1 - May 31, 2026. Citations tracked from real prompt responses using Google AI Mode.
What this means for you
May is a regime change: google.com itself becomes the most-cited domain at 4.24%, overtaking YouTube (3.42%) for the first time in this series. Add YouTube, and Google-owned properties account for roughly 7.7% of all citations we tracked. AI Mode increasingly answers with Google's own surfaces, from Maps and Business Profiles to support pages.
Reddit also had a strong month at 2.36%, which keeps community content firmly in the top three, while no other domain in the list clears 1%. Compared with ChatGPT's citation mix (where Reddit leads and google.com barely appears), AI Mode's self-referential tilt is its most distinctive trait.
How to act on it
- Treat your Google surfaces as citation assets: complete and actively maintained Business Profiles, Maps listings, and Merchant Center data are exactly the kind of google.com content AI Mode now cites at 4.24%.
- Reddit's 2.36%, the largest non-Google share after YouTube, makes genuine participation in your niche's subreddits one of the highest-leverage GEO moves this month.
- Everything below the top three sits under 1%, so pick the handful of high-intent questions in your category and build the single best crawlable answer for each. That is how long-tail domains get pulled into AI Mode's fan-out.
AI Mode Citation Share
April vs May 2026
Side-by-side comparison of citation share for the top domains on Google AI Mode between April and May 2026.
What this means for you
The April-to-May comparison shows the sharpest single move in this dataset: google.com exploded from 0.71% to 4.24%, a roughly sixfold increase that took it straight to #1. Reddit jumped 44% as well, from 1.64% to 2.36%, while YouTube held essentially flat (3.34% to 3.42%). The gains came at the expense of professional and editorial platforms: LinkedIn fell from 0.84% to 0.63% and Medium from 0.39% to 0.28%. In one month, AI Mode's citation mix pivoted toward Google's own properties and community content.
How to act on it
- Build monthly citation tracking into your reporting: a 6x move like google.com's means the channel mix you optimized for in April was already outdated by May.
- Respond to the Reddit surge (+44%): audit which threads AI Mode-style questions about your category appear in, and make sure your brand has a credible, helpful presence there before competitors do.
- If Medium or LinkedIn posts were part of your distribution strategy, note both lost a quarter of their share this month. Republishing that content on your own domain keeps the citation if the platform keeps fading.
