Google AI Overview Citation Share - January 2026
The Most Cited Domains on
AI Overviews in January 2026
Based on 568,499 prompts and 5,585,499 citations tracked from Jan 1 - Jan 31, 2026. Citations are tracked from search responses using Google AI Overviews (inline/side panel).
What this means for you
YouTube tops the January chart at 2.32% of all AI Overview citations, ahead of Reddit at 1.69%. That is the reverse of ChatGPT, where Reddit dominates by a wide margin. Because AI Overviews sit directly on top of classic Google Search, the citation mix mirrors Google's existing trust signals, and Google's own video platform sits at the top of that hierarchy.
The bigger takeaway is how flat the curve is: Facebook and LinkedIn tie at 0.63%, and even the top two domains combined account for barely 4% of citations. AI Overviews spread their citations across an enormous long tail, which leaves real room for smaller sites that rank well for specific queries.
How to act on it
- Treat classic SEO as your AI Overviews strategy: pages that already rank in Google's top results are the ones the AI layer pulls from. If you rank for a query, you're in the citation pool; if you don't, you're invisible to AI Overviews too.
- Add video to your content mix: YouTube's 2.32% lead shows Google's AI layer reaches for its own video platform. A well-optimized YouTube video on your core topics is a second door into the same AI Overview.
- Don't write off your own domain: with even the #1 source below 2.5%, the overwhelming majority of citations flow to the long tail of specialized sites. Focused, factual pages on niche queries can win citations big platforms don't cover.
