The Most Cited Domains on
Google AI Overviews in June 2026

Based on prompts and citations tracked from Jun 1 - Jun 27, 2026 (month-to-date). Citations are tracked from search responses using Google AI Overviews (inline/side panel).

What this means for you

June sets year-to-date highs across the board: YouTube reaches 4.16% of all AI Overview citations, Reddit 2.72%, and google.com 2.30%. Together the top three now hold over 9% of citations, roughly double their combined share in January, so the head of the curve is steadily absorbing citation share that used to be spread across the tail.

Two of those three are Google properties. Between YouTube and google.com, Google now cites its own platforms for about 6.5% of all AI Overview sources, a concentration of self-reference that has no equivalent in ChatGPT's citation mix and keeps compounding month after month.

How to act on it

  • Prioritize the whole Google ecosystem rather than the SERP alone: with YouTube (4.16%) and google.com (2.30%) both Google-owned, a YouTube channel and well-maintained Google surfaces (Business Profile, Merchant Center, help content) are now core GEO assets.
  • Treat Reddit at 2.72% as a research tool as much as a channel: the threads AI Overviews cite reveal exactly which questions your prospects ask, so mine them for content briefs and answer the gaps on your own site.
  • Track concentration as a leading indicator: if the top three keep absorbing share at this rate, being cited will increasingly require either presence on those platforms or unambiguous topical authority on your own domain.

Google AI Overview Citation Share
May vs June 2026

Side-by-side comparison of citation share for the top domains on Google AI Overview between May and June 2026 (June is month-to-date).

What this means for you

From May to June, google.com doubled its citation share again, from 1.15% to 2.30%. That caps a run from just 0.37% in January, a sixfold increase in five months. YouTube added 0.42 points to reach 4.16% and Reddit rose from 2.52% to 2.72%, while the reference layer quietly recovered: Wikipedia climbed 50% (0.10% to 0.15%) and Quora went from 0.17% to 0.24%. The mild losers were short-form and analyst platforms; TikTok slipped from 0.13% to 0.10% and Gartner from 0.13% to 0.11%. Google is routing more AI Overview citations to itself and to a few dominant platforms.

How to act on it

  • Audit which of your target queries now trigger AI Overviews citing google.com surfaces. Where Google answers with its own properties, shift effort toward being represented inside them (listings, profiles, Shopping data) instead of fighting for the same citation.
  • Q&A-style content is quietly working: Wikipedia (0.10% to 0.15%) and Quora (0.17% to 0.24%) both gained roughly 40% or more. Well-structured, factual answer pages on your site target the same retrieval behavior.
  • Compare June's snapshot against your own Promptwatch data before reallocating spend. June is month-to-date, and partial-month numbers can overstate momentum for fast risers like google.com.
