How Many Upvotes Do the Reddit Reddit Posts AI Cites Have?

The upvote counts of Reddit posts at the time AI search engines cited them. Based on Promptwatch data from Jan 1 - Feb 1, 2026.

What this means for you

Viral posts are not what AI cites. Around 71% of the Reddit posts ChatGPT cited in January (13,755 of roughly 19,500 citations) had fewer than 10 upvotes, and another 22% had 10-50. Posts with 500+ upvotes accounted for barely 0.6% of citations.

AI retrieval selects posts for topical relevance to the prompt, not for popularity. That flips the usual social media playbook: an obscure thread that precisely answers a niche question is far more citable than a front-page hit.

How to act on it

  • Stop treating upvote counts as the goal. Focus on writing the single answer in a thread that directly and completely resolves the question. That's what retrieval systems extract, not the most popular post.
  • Answer new and low-competition questions in your niche subreddits. A helpful reply on a thread with 5 upvotes has roughly the same citation odds as one with 500, and far less competition.
  • Don't buy or bait engagement to chase AI visibility. The data shows it doesn't move the needle, and it risks getting your account or brand banned from the communities that matter.

How Many Comments Do the Reddit Reddit Posts AI Cites Have?

The comment counts of Reddit posts at the time AI search engines cited them. Based on Promptwatch data from Jan 1 - Feb 1, 2026.

What this means for you

The pattern from upvotes repeats with comments: about 55% of cited posts had fewer than 10 comments and roughly 90% had fewer than 50. Threads with 250+ comments (the classic megathreads) produced just 10 citations out of ~19,500. Long, sprawling discussions are actually harder for AI systems to extract a clean answer from; a short thread with a couple of clear, complete replies is the format that gets referenced.

How to act on it

  • Seed discussions with specific, searchable questions (the kind your customers type into ChatGPT) rather than broad debate prompts. A thread with 5-20 substantive replies is the citation sweet spot.
  • When you or your community answer a thread, make one reply self-contained: restate the problem, give the recommendation, and explain why. AI engines lift complete answers, not fragments spread across 40 comments.
  • Monitor smaller, focused threads where your brand comes up. They're more likely to be cited than megathreads, so a wrong or outdated claim there does real damage in AI answers.

How Fresh Are the Reddit Reddit Posts Cited in AI Search?

The age of Reddit posts at the time AI search engines cited them. Based on Promptwatch data from Jan 1 - Feb 1, 2026.

What this means for you

Reddit citations skew old: 2+ year-old posts were the single largest bucket at about 22% of citations, and roughly 60% of all cited posts were more than six months old. Only around 11% were less than a month old when cited.

For marketers this means the Reddit threads shaping AI answers about your brand today were mostly written months or years ago. Your current share of voice in AI search reflects your historical community footprint, and what you contribute now will pay out over a similarly long horizon.

How to act on it

  • Treat Reddit participation as a compounding asset, not a campaign. A genuinely useful answer you write today can keep surfacing in AI responses for years. Unlike an ad, it doesn't stop working when you stop paying.
  • Audit what AI engines currently cite about your category from threads that are 1-2+ years old. If the top-cited threads contain outdated pricing, features, or recommendations, add a current, well-sourced reply to correct the record.
  • Don't skip fresh threads either: 11% of citations came from posts under a month old, so answering new questions quickly still earns near-term visibility while the post ages into the long tail.
