Prompt volume estimates how frequently a specific question is put to AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Claude. It plays the role that search volume plays in traditional SEO: a way to decide which of the thousands of questions in a category are worth competing on.
The estimation problem is harder than for keywords. No AI provider publishes query counts the way search engines expose keyword data, so prompt volume is modeled rather than measured—derived from proxies such as related keyword demand, observed conversational patterns, panel data, and clickstream samples. Treat it as a prioritization signal with real uncertainty, not a reported fact.
A related metric, prompt value, multiplies prompt volume by a comparable keyword bid price to approximate what that visibility would cost through paid search. It is useful for arguing that a high-intent prompt deserves investment, and unreliable as a revenue forecast. Its job is ranking opportunities against each other, not predicting pipeline.
Prompt volume also behaves differently from keyword volume in kind, not just in accuracy. Prompts—natural-language queries—are longer, more conversational, and more likely to carry context and constraints, so volume concentrates less in short head terms and spreads across many phrasings of the same underlying need. Query fan-out compounds this: one user prompt can generate many machine sub-queries, so the prompts an engine actually issues may never appear in any volume estimate. Most teams therefore build their prompt sets around intent clusters rather than chasing individual high-volume strings.
