What is Amzn-User?

Amzn-User is one of three crawlers documented on Amazon's Amazonbot page, alongside Amazonbot and Amzn-SearchBot. Each one has its own robots.txt setting, and changes can take about 24 hours to apply.

Amazon describes Amzn-User as supporting user actions, such as responding to Alexa queries that need current information. Because a user can initiate the request, Amazon says it may not follow all robots.txt directives. It also states that Amzn-User does not crawl content for generative AI model training.

Amazon publishes the IP addresses its live fetchers use, so you can check a request against that list instead of trusting the user-agent string. Amazon's page also says its crawlers respect noarchive (do not use the page for model training), noindex and none meta directives.

Relevant for AI searchAlexa

Is Amzn-User relevant for AI search?

Yes. Amzn-User fetches live pages to answer Alexa questions, so it shapes what Alexa says and cites.

When a customer asks Alexa something that needs up-to-date information, Amzn-User may fetch pages from the web to answer on the customer's behalf. Amazon says it does not crawl content for generative AI model training. Blocking it can remove your pages from those live answers, though Amazon notes it may not follow all robots.txt directives.

How to handle Amzn-User

Most sites keep Amzn-User allowed, because it only runs when a customer wants an answer that involves your content. To opt out in robots.txt:

User-agent: Amzn-User
Disallow: /

Amazon says user-initiated fetches may not follow every directive, so confirm in your logs and use the published IP list for a firewall rule if you need a hard block. Handle Amazonbot (possible model training) and Amzn-SearchBot (search for Alexa and Rufus) separately.

Examples

  • A customer asks Alexa for today's opening hours, and Amzn-User fetches the business's contact page.
  • A site owner blocks `Amazonbot` to opt out of model training but leaves Amzn-User allowed so Alexa can still read the site.
