What is Channel3Bot?

Channel3Bot visits public product detail pages for Channel3. The resulting index feeds Channel3's universal product catalog, where AI agents can find products and send shoppers back to the merchant's original page.

According to Channel3's bot documentation, the crawler reads product information such as images, titles, descriptions, prices, availability, variants, and other attributes. Its documented user agents are Channel3/1.0 (+https://trychannel3.com/channel3bot) and Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Channel3Bot/1.0; +https://trychannel3.com/channel3bot). Those requests should be concentrated on public catalog pages, not accounts or checkout screens.

This is an AI product-discovery crawler, but it is not described as a general-purpose model-training bot. Allowing it can make current product details available in Channel3-powered experiences. It does not guarantee placement, a sale, or visibility in unrelated AI assistants.

Channel3 says its crawler respects robots.txt and rate limits concurrent requests. Cloudflare's directory entry disagrees on the first point and marks followsRobotsTxt as false. Since the two published sources conflict, treat compliance as partial and confirm it against requests to your own disallowed paths.

There are two useful identity checks. Channel3 documents reverse and forward DNS verification for hostnames ending in bot.trychannel3.com; it says the crawler runs from changing US-based AWS addresses. Cloudflare also publishes the Web Bot Auth directory at https://bot.trychannel3.com/.well-known/http-message-signatures-directory for signed traffic.

Merchants often have a reason to allow product pages while excluding stale archives or nonpublic areas. Put that policy in robots.txt, then use the signature or DNS check before exempting Channel3Bot from broader bot controls.

Relevant for AI search

Is Channel3Bot relevant for AI search?

Yes. Channel3Bot collects pages for an AI product, so what it can crawl influences how AI systems describe your brand.

Channel3Bot crawls and indexes pages so the AI search or assistant behind it can retrieve them at answer time. A page it has never fetched cannot be quoted, summarized, or linked in that product's answers, so most sites keep it allowed to stay citable. Blocking it removes your pages from that AI surface and hands those citations to competitors.

How to handle Channel3Bot

Allow Channel3Bot on public product pages if you want those items eligible for Channel3's catalog. Exclude the crawler if you do not want Channel3 to index them. A full-site exclusion uses:

User-agent: Channel3Bot
Disallow: /

Channel3 states that the crawler follows robots.txt, while Cloudflare's bot directory marks it otherwise. Watch your logs after publishing a rule. Before creating a firewall exception, verify a signed request with https://bot.trychannel3.com/.well-known/http-message-signatures-directory or complete Channel3's reverse and forward DNS check for a hostname ending in bot.trychannel3.com.

Examples

  • A retailer leaves `/products/` open so Channel3 can index its catalog, but disallows an old clearance archive that should no longer surface in product discovery.
  • A marketplace notices repeated Channel3Bot requests after a robots.txt change and checks the requested paths before deciding whether an edge rule is needed.
  • A security team verifies `bot.trychannel3.com` with forward-confirmed reverse DNS before allowing the crawler through a general automation filter.
