What is Discord Bot?

Discord Bot requests URLs that people place in Discord chats. It reads the shared page so Discord can assemble an embed with contextual material such as the title, description, and image.

The fetch belongs to the message preview, not to the eventual click. A server may see Discord Bot even when no chat participant opens the URL, so these requests should be separated from human referral traffic. Discord also lets a sender suppress an embed for one link by wrapping the URL in angle brackets.

Cloudflare's bot directory records the full user agent as Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Discordbot/2.0; +https://discordapp.com). This bot entry is marked unverifiable and provides no authenticated IP range or signature directory. Discordbot is useful for classification, but the header can be imitated.

There is no documented AI search or model-training purpose for this fetcher. Its effect is confined to Discord's link-preview workflow. Robots behavior is disputed: this entry says the bot respects robots.txt, while Cloudflare explicitly marks followsRobotsTxt as false.

Indirectly relevant

Is Discord Bot relevant for AI search?

Indirectly. Discord Bot has no AI product of its own, but its output can end up in the systems that AI answers draw on.

Discord Bot fetches pages to build link-preview cards. It does not feed an AI index, but it reads the same Open Graph and structured metadata that AI systems parse to understand your pages, so clean preview metadata doubles as AI-friendly metadata.

How to handle Discord Bot

Allow Discord Bot on public pages if you want links shared in chats to receive embeds. Continue requiring normal credentials for private pages, since a preview request should not gain access that an anonymous visitor lacks.

Cloudflare's recorded product token supports this rule:

User-agent: Discordbot
Disallow: /

The available records disagree about compliance, so do not promise that the robots rule will stop every request. Watch subsequent traffic and use an edge or application block when denial is required. If only the person posting the message wants no embed, Discord's angle-bracket syntax avoids the preview without changing the website.

Examples

  • Someone posts a release-note URL in a Discord channel, and the origin logs Discordbot fetching the page before any member visits it.
  • A sender writes `<https://example.com/private-announcement>` so Discord leaves that message without an automatic embed.
