What is GitHub Camo?
GitHub Camo sits between a GitHub reader and an externally hosted image. GitHub rewrites the image through an anonymized proxy URL, Camo retrieves the source file, and the reader receives it from GitHub's infrastructure instead of contacting the image host directly.
That arrangement hides the reader's browser details from the image origin. A Camo request is therefore an asset fetch, not proof that someone visited the surrounding website. GitHub can serve a cached copy, and purging the Camo URL causes the proxy to request the source image again.
GitHub's documentation says an image on a private network or behind authentication cannot be viewed through Camo. Anyone who obtains the anonymized URL can view the proxied file, so sensitive media belongs on an authenticated server rather than at a public image URL.
Camo has no documented AI search or training function. this bot marks robots.txt support as true, but it contains no stable user-agent token and Cloudflare has no matching identity record. Without a documented product token, a GitHub Camo-specific robots group would be guesswork.
