What is Google Images?
Googlebot Image is Google's crawler for image search. It retrieves image resources so Google can consider them for Google Images and other Google features that display visual assets. This bot is about the hosted image itself, even though Google may discover that resource through an ordinary web page.
Google's common crawler documentation says rules for Googlebot-Image affect Google Images, Discover, Google Video, and Google Search features that present images, logos, or favicons. Blocking it can therefore have effects beyond the standalone Images tab. It does not, by itself, remove the surrounding HTML page from Google's web index.
In HTTP logs the recorded signature is Googlebot-Image/1.0. Google accepts both Googlebot-Image and Googlebot as robots tokens for this crawler, so a broad Googlebot policy can also affect image retrieval. Image hosts and CDNs need their own policy because a robots file only governs URLs on the host where that file is served.
The crawler can influence whether a visual asset is available in Google search features. That is a search-indexing effect, not evidence of AI model training. Google does not identify Googlebot-Image as a training crawler, and a visit does not show that the image became training data for Gemini or another model.
There is a source discrepancy worth keeping visible. The bot metadata leaves robots compliance unknown, and Cloudflare's bot directory marks followsRobotsTxt as false for this entry. Google's current operator documentation classifies Googlebot Image as a common crawler, says common crawlers obey robots.txt during automatic crawls, and publishes image-removal rules using this exact token. That is the clearest statement of Google's intended behavior.
A copied user agent is not enough to verify the sender. Google publishes common-crawler IP ranges and documents a reverse DNS followed by forward DNS check; valid common-crawler hostnames end under googlebot.com. This catalog entry is not marked as IP verified and has no Web Bot Auth signature URL, so sites should perform Google's check before granting special network access.
