What is OAI-AdsBot?

OAI-AdsBot is OpenAI's crawler for landing pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT. Its job is to check those pages for safety and policy compliance. OpenAI may also inspect the landing-page content to decide when an ad is relevant to a user.

The ad submission is what triggers the visit. OpenAI says OAI-AdsBot only requests pages submitted as ads, so it is not meant to roam a site or build a general web index. A request often arrives during ad review or after a landing page has been resubmitted.

This crawler belongs to the advertising workflow, not ChatGPT search. Allowing it does not make a page eligible for an organic ChatGPT citation, and blocking it does not opt a site out of ChatGPT search. OAI-SearchBot is the separate control for that surface.

OAI-AdsBot also has no role in model training. OpenAI states that data collected by this crawler is not used to train its generative AI foundation models. GPTBot has a different purpose and a separate robots.txt token, so the two should not share a policy by accident.

The stable token is OAI-AdsBot. OpenAI and Cloudflare list the full user agent as Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko); compatible; OAI-AdsBot/1.0; +https://openai.com/adsbot. Cloudflare identifies OpenAI as the operator and points to the OpenAI crawler documentation.

For an advertiser, a successful request means the review system could reach the submitted URL. It does not mean that the ad passed review. Status codes, redirects, bot challenges, authentication, and geo restrictions can still prevent the crawler from evaluating the final landing page.

Relevant for AI searchChatGPT

Is OAI-AdsBot relevant for AI search?

Yes. OAI-AdsBot feeds ChatGPT, so the pages it can reach shape what those AI products say about you.

OAI-AdsBot fetches, indexes, or retrieves pages for an AI product, so the pages it can reach shape how that system describes your brand and products.

Track OAI-AdsBot with Promptwatch

Promptwatch classifies OAI-AdsBot (OAI-AdsBot) in real time from your server and CDN logs. See exactly when it visits, which pages it requests, the status codes it gets, and how those crawls map to AI citations.

How to handle OAI-AdsBot

Sites running ads on ChatGPT should allow OAI-AdsBot to reach every submitted landing page. Check the complete redirect chain as well as the final URL, and make sure a CDN challenge or login wall is not returning a different response to the crawler.

OAI-AdsBot has a stable robots.txt token and OpenAI documents that its crawlers respect these rules. To block its visits, use:

User-agent: OAI-AdsBot
Disallow: /

A block can prevent ad validation. If the goal is to keep content out of ChatGPT search or foundation-model training, configure OAI-SearchBot or GPTBot instead. An OAI-AdsBot rule does not control either use.

Examples

  • An advertiser submits a campaign, then finds that OAI-AdsBot received a 403 on the landing page because the site's bot challenge ran before the page loaded.
  • A security engineer allows OAI-AdsBot on the campaign path while leaving unrelated OpenAI crawler policies unchanged.
  • After a landing-page redirect changes, the ads team checks the request chain and confirms that OAI-AdsBot reaches the final HTTPS URL.
