What is Slack-ImgProxy?

Slack-ImgProxy fetches and caches images posted in Slack channels. Slack serves the cached copy through its own image proxy instead of asking each user's browser to load the source image directly.

Slack says the proxy hides detailed referrer information that could contain team or project names, delivers the image over HTTPS, and improves loading performance. This bot is narrower than Slackbot-LinkExpanding, which reads page metadata for link unfurls and may validate media referenced by those tags.

An image request from Slack-ImgProxy is infrastructure traffic, not a human pageview and not proof that someone clicked a related link. The bot has no documented role in AI search, response citations, or model training. Blocking it can prevent the source image from appearing through Slack's proxy, but it is not an AI opt-out.

Slack's robots page lists Slack-ImgProxy 0.19 (+https://api.slack.com/robots) and explicitly says Slack's robots do not currently honor robots.txt because they act for users and do not follow links. That conflicts with the respectsRobotsTxt: true metadata stored in this file. The current operator statement is the safer basis for access policy.

Slack-ImgProxy fetches pages to build link-preview cards. It does not feed an AI index, but it reads the same Open Graph and structured metadata that AI systems parse to understand your pages, so clean preview metadata doubles as AI-friendly metadata.

How to handle Slack-ImgProxy

Allow Slack-ImgProxy on public images if people should be able to post and view them in Slack. Keep private images behind authentication or expiring signed URLs, since the user agent does not confer permission.

Slack says it will not honor that rule. For a Slack-specific block or a change to embed behavior, its official guidance is to contact Slack; an edge or application rule can enforce an immediate denial. Do not mistake Slack-ImgProxy for the separate link-expanding bot.

  • A user posts a public diagram in a channel, and Slack-ImgProxy downloads and caches the image before Slack serves it to channel members.
  • A server log contains Slack-ImgProxy rather than the workspace member's browser address because Slack sits between the member and the image host.
