What is Updown.io?

Updown.io sends periodic probes to a URI or network service selected by its customer. For a website, those HTTP or HTTPS requests measure availability and response time. The service also supports TCP, TLS, and ICMP checks, which may not appear in normal application access logs.

A web check can report downtime, an unexpected response, degraded performance, or a broken certificate. Updown.io can send the result through its alert integrations and publish uptime and performance measurements on a status page. It checks the configured target rather than following links to discover the rest of the site.

The requests come from updown.io monitoring nodes at the interval saved for the check. Updown.io says all its requests contain updown.io in the user agent; updown.io daemon 2.2 is one recorded form. The operator publishes current node addresses through its API and through ips.updown.io for teams that need source verification or firewall rules.

These probes do not collect content for AI answers or model training. Their only practical connection to search visibility is the outage they may reveal. Restoring an unavailable page can make it reachable again, while allowing the updown.io probe itself does not affect AI citations.

Is Updown.io relevant for AI search?

No. Updown.io is not part of AI search or training, so allowing or blocking it does not change your AI visibility.

Updown.io runs synthetic monitoring or uptime checks on a schedule. It is not collecting content for any index or model, so it has no bearing on search rankings or AI answers. You usually see it because your own team or a service you use set up a check.

How to handle Updown.io

Allow the configured target if your team expects updown.io to report on it. When a WAF rejects the probe, updown.io recommends matching updown.io in the user agent. Its API and ips.updown.io provide the current monitoring addresses when an IP rule is required.

The stable identifier can be addressed in robots.txt:

The bot record marks robots support, but updown.io's monitoring documentation does not explain whether HTTP probes fetch or enforce robots.txt. Treat that rule as unconfirmed. Pause or delete the check in the account for a clean stop, or enforce a verified network rule if you do not control it. A rejected active probe can be recorded as downtime and trigger the configured alert.

  • A team targets `/healthz` and sees `updown.io daemon` at the chosen interval, with the measured response time appearing in its monitoring results.
