When someone asks ChatGPT which car to buy, how much a model costs, or where to get one serviced, these are the sites it links to in its answer. Based on Promptwatch data from Aug 1 to Aug 31, 2026, collected from real automotive prompts run through ChatGPT.

What this means for you

Autotrader.com leads with 5% of all automotive citations, followed by Cars.com at 4.6%. Seven of the top eight domains are marketplaces or automotive research and review sites. Chevrolet.com is the only manufacturer site in that group, ranking fourth at 2.62%.

Reddit ranks ninth at 1.34%, behind the major car shopping and research sites. One individual dealership domain also reaches the top 31: birchwoodgroup.co.uk at 0.28%.
