Which Content Types Does ChatGPT Cite the Most?
Citation share by content type in ChatGPT
Based on every ChatGPT citation with a classified content type from Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026. Each bar is that content type's share of all classified citations. A page cited in several responses counts once per citation.
Product pages lead, but editorial content earns the most citations combined
Product pages are the single most cited content type, with 22.4% of all classified ChatGPT citations. Landing pages follow at 16.8%, so 39% of what ChatGPT cites is a page describing what a company sells.
Editorial content earns even more when you add it up. Listicles come in third at 13.6%, followed by how-to guides (8.7%), general articles (6.1%), comparisons (5.9%), and news (5.7%). Together with reviews and other editorial formats, that is 43% of all citations. Documentation adds 7.5% and FAQ pages 3.3%. Reviews, at 1.7%, earn fewer citations than you might expect.
Share is only half the picture, though: the content half-life report shows that news pages lose half their citations within about five weeks, while landing pages and docs keep most of theirs for months.
Where to put your content effort
- Treat your product and landing pages as your main citation surface. Keep specs, prices, and positioning on them complete and factual, because ChatGPT quotes them directly.
- Invest in listicles, how-to guides, and comparisons as much as in your own pages. Together they earn 28% of citations and reach the questions your product pages can't answer.
- Add documentation and FAQ sections where buyers have practical questions. Both formats earn a steady share of citations and are easy to keep accurate.
Citation share by content type for Commercial prompts
Commercial prompts come from people comparing options before they buy, such as "best CRM for small businesses" or "top project management tools". Based on ChatGPT citations for these prompts from Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026. Each bar is that content type's share of all classified citations for commercial prompts.
Commercial answers lean on product pages, landing pages, and listicles
When people compare options, ChatGPT cites product pages most (26.0%), followed by landing pages (20.6%) and listicles (15.0%). Comparisons earn 7.9%, more than their 5.9% share across all prompts. Together, these four types make up almost 70% of commercial citations.
Get into the shortlist
- Make your product pages easy to compare: clear pricing, specs, and who the product is for.
- Get listed in the "best of" roundups ChatGPT cites for your category, and publish your own comparison pages.
Citation share by content type for Informational prompts
Informational prompts ask how something works or what something means, such as "how does a CRM work". Based on ChatGPT citations for these prompts from Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026. Each bar is that content type's share of all classified citations for informational prompts.
Informational answers still cite product pages most, but guides and docs gain ground
Even when people ask how something works, product pages earn the most citations (19.1%), ahead of landing pages (13.9%) and listicles (13.6%). How-to guides (10.7%), documentation (8.5%), and general articles (7.7%) all earn a larger share here than across all prompts, and product pages earn less than they do for commercial prompts (26.0%).
Answer the question first
- Publish step-by-step guides for the questions your buyers ask before they look at products.
- Keep your documentation public and easy to crawl. ChatGPT cites it for how-it-works questions, not only for support.
Citation share by content type for Branded prompts
Branded prompts name a specific company or product, such as "is HubSpot good for startups". Based on ChatGPT citations for these prompts from Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026. Each bar is that content type's share of all classified citations for branded prompts.
Branded answers lean on product and landing pages, and reviews count more
When a prompt names a brand, product pages (23.3%) and landing pages (22.8%) together earn almost half of branded citations. Reviews rise to 5.6%, more than three times their share across all prompts, and social posts to 3.0%, almost four times. FAQ pages (4.8%) and press releases (2.1%) also earn more here than across all prompts.
Own the answer about your brand
- Make sure your homepage, product pages, and docs answer what people ask about you: pricing, features, and who it's for.
- Collect reviews on the sites people trust in your category. ChatGPT cites reviews far more often when a prompt names a brand.
- Add an FAQ page that covers common questions about your brand in plain language.
How prompt intent changes what ChatGPT cites
The 10 most cited content types side by side for commercial, informational, and branded prompts, from Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026. Each bar is that content type's share of all classified citations for that intent.
Each prompt intent has its own content mix
Product pages are the most cited content type for all three intents, but the rest of the mix shifts with the prompt. Listicles and comparisons matter most for commercial prompts, how-to guides, docs, and articles for informational prompts, and landing pages and reviews for branded prompts.
Plan content per intent
- Map your content to the intent you want to win. Each intent rewards a different content mix.
- Cover all three: product pages and comparisons for commercial prompts, guides and docs for informational prompts, and your own site, FAQ, and reviews for branded prompts.
