What this means for you

Each AI engine has a distinct social diet. ChatGPT is a Reddit specialist: 5.19% of its citations point there, more than 20 times its share for any other social platform. AI Overviews and Grok lead with YouTube (4.08% and 4.85%), and Perplexity does too (2.67%), while Grok spreads citations most evenly — it's the only engine giving Facebook (3.01%) and Instagram (1.7%) meaningful share.

The flip side: X barely registers anywhere, peaking at 0.25% on Grok despite sharing an owner. A one-size-fits-all social strategy will overinvest in platforms your target engine ignores.

How to act on it

  • Map your platform mix to your target engine: if your buyers ask ChatGPT, build a Reddit presence first (5.19% vs 0.23% for LinkedIn, its next-best social source). If they use AI Overviews, Perplexity, or Grok, lead with YouTube.
  • Deprioritize X for AI search visibility — it never exceeds 0.25% of citations on any engine — and treat Instagram and TikTok as brand channels rather than citation channels, with Grok as the partial exception (1.7% Instagram).
  • If you sell to consumers, note Grok's unusually broad social appetite (Facebook 3.01%, Instagram 1.7%): keeping public Facebook pages and Instagram profiles complete and active earns visibility there that other engines won't give you.
