Keyword volume measures how often a term is typed into a search engine. Prompt volume measures how often a question is actually asked to AI models, a different, often smaller pool of conversational, longer-form language rather than short keywords.
Prompt volume comes from the keywords attached to a prompt rather than the prompt sentence itself. Each keyword carries a monthly search volume figure for Google, Bing, and AI search, refreshed at most once every three months, and the prompt's score is a weighted average across those keywords, with AI search weighted 5 times, Bing weighted 1.5 times, and Google weighted 0.5 times. Volume is shown as a band from 1 to 10k+ using one to five bars rather than an exact number, and it reads No data until at least one keyword has volume.
AI models do not rank pages the way search engines do. They synthesize an answer from whichever sources they judge most relevant for that specific prompt, so a page can rank number one in Google and never get cited, and vice versa.
Difficulty estimates how much effort it would take to become visible for a prompt, based on the past 30 days. It blends keyword competition across major search engines in that topic area with the authority of the sources AI models already cite for it. A higher score means tougher competition, while a lower score signals an easier opportunity.
