Definition
AI Max for Search is a suite of targeting and creative features inside standard Google Ads Search campaigns. It is not a separate campaign type. Turning it on adds search term matching (broad match plus keywordless matching), text customization of headlines and descriptions, and final URL expansion, which lets Google send a user to a more relevant page on the advertiser's site than the one in the ad.
Google announced AI Max on May 6, 2025 and rolled it out globally in beta later that month (Google Ads announcement). Google says advertisers who activate it typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS, based on its internal 2025 data for non-retail advertisers. By 2026 it had become the default path: new Search campaigns have AI Max switched on, Dynamic Search Ads have an upgrade path into it, and Google's help center says campaigns using text customization are being upgraded to AI Max automatically from September 2026. The matching and URL features work best with conversion-based Smart Bidding, which Google lists as a requirement for them to function effectively.
AI Max sits close to Google's AI search surfaces but is not the entry ticket to them. There is no separate campaign for AI Mode or AI Overviews. In June 2026 Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin clarified that campaigns with broad match keywords are already eligible to show in both, and that AI Max widens eligibility by applying broad match behavior to phrase and exact keywords and by adding keywordless matching. Ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported together with other top-of-page ads, with no separate breakdown.
The link became tighter at Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026 (Google's announcement). Google began testing Conversational Discovery ads, where Gemini writes creative for the user's specific question, and Highlighted Answers, where an ad can appear inside an AI Mode list of recommendations; both include an AI-written explainer and a 'Sponsored' label. It also expanded Direct Offers, a pilot running since January 2026 in which AI Mode surfaces an advertiser's deal during a shopping conversation, with promotion bundling, native checkout for Universal Commerce Protocol merchants and a travel expansion. Google told advertisers to build on AI Max for Search, AI Max for Shopping and Performance Max to use these formats. In October 2026 a Direct Offer asset appeared in Google Ads in beta, and Google says it only serves on campaigns using AI Max or text customization.
For GEO teams, AI Max matters for two reasons. First, its creative and landing-page choices are generated from your site: text customization and final URL expansion read your pages, so clear, accurate product and category pages feed the paid side as much as the organic side. URL exclusions and brand controls are the main levers to keep ads away from pages such as careers or support. Second, paid and organic now appear in the same AI answer. A brand cited in an AI Mode response may see a competitor's Highlighted Answer in the same list, so it helps to track both organic visibility and AI search ads on the same prompts. Retailers should also keep Merchant Center and product feeds complete, since Shopping formats in AI Mode draw on them.
Examples of AI Max for Search
- An apparel brand running only exact-match keywords like 'red midi dress' turns on AI Max, and the search terms report starts showing an 'AI Max' match type for longer queries such as 'colorful midi dresses for a summer wedding'.
- A B2B software company adds URL exclusions for /careers/ and /support/ after final URL expansion starts sending paid clicks from AI Max to job listings and help articles.
- A pet supply retailer uploads single-use promo codes as a Direct Offer asset in October 2026. In AI Mode the offer appears as a 'Claim one-time code' link under its sponsored result, but only on campaigns with AI Max switched on.
- A marketing team sees its organic product page cited in an AI Mode list of recommendations and, two weeks later, a competitor appearing in the same list as a Highlighted Answer ad.
