AI Search Ads are sponsored placements shown inside AI search responses. As AI assistants have grown, platforms including ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews have begun surfacing advertiser content alongside or within generated answers, creating a new ad surface beyond traditional SERP ads.
For GEO teams this matters in two ways. First, ads reduce the share of an AI answer available to organic citations, so a brand that is cited organically can still lose clicks to a competitor's sponsored placement. Second, ads create a paid lever inside AI search that complements organic AI citation optimization, similar to how paid search coexists with SEO.
Ad load is uneven and growing. Promptwatch tracks the daily share of citation-enabled ChatGPT Search responses that include ads in the ChatGPT ads over time report, and the Ads Radar feature (covered in our ads radar announcement) identifies which advertisers appear on which prompts and where their traffic lands.
Teams should treat AI search ads as a distinct channel to monitor: track which prompts trigger ads, which competitors buy them, and how ad presence correlates with changes in your organic citation share and AI share of voice.
Examples of AI Search Ads
- A user asks ChatGPT for running shoes and the response includes a sponsored product card from an advertiser ahead of the organic citations.
- A brand notices its organic [citation share](/glossary/citation-share) on a commercial prompt dropped after a competitor began buying AI search ads on the same prompt.
- A performance marketing team extends its paid search reporting to include AI search ad impressions captured via Ads Radar.
- An e-commerce team compares [ChatGPT shopping feature usage](/data/chatgpt-shopping-usage) with ad share to decide where to invest between organic GEO and paid AI placements.
