What is Adsense?

Google's AdSense ads crawler visits pages that request ads from Google's systems. It processes and indexes the page content so AdSense can choose relevant advertising. Google says only URLs carrying its ad tags should generate these crawl requests.

That index supports ad delivery, not Google Search. Blocking the AdSense crawler can stop Google from understanding a page well enough to serve contextual ads, but it does not remove the page from organic search. There is also no documented connection between this crawler and AI answers or foundation-model training.

AdSense normally reads the page available to an unauthenticated visitor. Publishers who serve ads behind a login can configure crawler credentials in their AdSense account and verify the site through Search Console. Those credentials should be scoped to the intended pages rather than used to expose a private site generally.

The catalog stores Adsense as its matching token, but Google's official user agent for this crawler is Mediapartners-Google. That official token is the one to use in robots.txt. Google says the crawler honors specific robots rules, and a wildcard rule alone may not prevent it from visiting pages that contain ad tags.

Relevant for AI search

Is Adsense relevant for AI search?

Yes. Adsense collects pages for an AI product, so what it can crawl influences how AI systems describe your brand.

Adsense feeds a search index that also powers that engine's AI answer features and overviews. One crawl can serve a classic results page and a generated summary, so blocking it costs you both the rankings you would expect and a growing share of AI answers built on the same index.

How to handle Adsense

Keep Mediapartners-Google allowed on pages where you expect AdSense to classify the content and serve ads. If protected pages carry ads, use the crawler-login controls in AdSense instead of opening those routes to every visitor.

To prevent this crawler from accessing the site, target the official token directly:

User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
Disallow: /

Google also documents Google-Display-Ads-Bot as an ads crawler, so write a separate group if that identity appears in your logs. Blocking either crawler is an advertising decision, not an AI-training or search deindexing control.

Examples

  • A publisher adds AdSense tags to a recipe page, and Mediapartners-Google fetches the page to classify its subject for ad selection.
  • A subscription site configures an AdSense crawler login for the small set of member pages that display ads without making those pages public.
  • A company disallows Mediapartners-Google on an ad-free documentation host while leaving Googlebot's search access unchanged.
