What is Steam Chat?

Steam Chat fetches a URL after someone shares it in the Steam client's chat interface. Valve uses the response to show other participants a preview of the destination. The request is linked to chat activity, not routine discovery of every page on the host.

Two related identities appear in the matching Cloudflare record: Valve/Steam HTTP Client 1.0 (SteamChatURLLookup) and SteamChatImageProxy. A site may therefore see one request associated with looking up the page and another associated with a preview image. The catalog's stable matching token is SteamChat.

Neither the bot metadata nor Valve's public material establishes robots.txt compliance, and Cloudflare's bot directory marks the identity as not following robots rules. No verified IP identity or request-signature directory is attached to the record. A client can copy either observed user agent, so private content still needs normal authorization.

This traffic changes whether Steam can prepare a card for a shared URL. It does not place the page in a public search index, and Valve documents no AI answer or model-training purpose for it.

Indirectly. Steam Chat has no AI product of its own, but its output can end up in the systems that AI answers draw on.

Steam Chat fetches pages to build link-preview cards. It does not feed an AI index, but it reads the same Open Graph and structured metadata that AI systems parse to understand your pages, so clean preview metadata doubles as AI-friendly metadata.

How to handle Steam Chat

Let the preview lookup and public image requests reach pages that Steam users are likely to share, such as game announcements or support articles. Keep account data and unpublished material behind login checks regardless of the user agent.
