Telegram Bot

TelegramBot crawls websites to render a link preview when people send a message containing a URL in the Telegram messaging service.

What is Telegram Bot?

A Telegram Bot request is normally connected to a URL sent in a Telegram message. Telegram fetches the page to produce the text and media shown in a link preview. It is responding to a share event rather than walking the site to maintain a general search index.

Cloudflare has observed the full user agent TelegramBot (like TwitterBot), while this bot uses the stable token TelegramBot. A page and its preview image must be publicly reachable for the card to work. A successful fetch still does not guarantee that every Telegram client or conversation will display a preview.

Robots behavior is not established in the bot metadata, and the matching Cloudflare record marks the crawler as not following robots.txt. Telegram does not publish an authenticated IP list or request-signature directory in this bot. The token can identify expected preview traffic in logs, but it cannot prove that Telegram sent a particular request.

Telegram Bot has no supported AI search or training role. Blocking it affects Telegram link previews, not a documented AI collection process. Allowing it likewise does not raise a page's eligibility for an AI-generated answer.

Indirectly relevant

Is Telegram Bot relevant for AI search?

Indirectly. Telegram Bot has no AI product of its own, but its output can end up in the systems that AI answers draw on.

Telegram Bot fetches pages to build link-preview cards. It does not feed an AI index, but it reads the same Open Graph and structured metadata that AI systems parse to understand your pages, so clean preview metadata doubles as AI-friendly metadata.

How to handle Telegram Bot

Allow requests to public pages and preview assets if Telegram cards are useful to your readers. Do not expose private pages for this purpose. Telegram should receive the same public representation that an unauthenticated visitor receives.

You can state a crawl preference with the recorded token:

User-agent: TelegramBot
Disallow: /

Compliance is unknown and Cloudflare's bot directory marks it false, so this rule is not a reliable access control. Confirm behavior in logs and use authentication or an edge block when the restriction must be enforced.

Examples

  • A reader sends an article URL in a group chat, and TelegramBot requests the article and its public preview image.
  • A product page returns its normal HTML to `TelegramBot (like TwitterBot)`, allowing Telegram to build a card without granting access to customer-only routes.
  • An administrator adds a TelegramBot disallow rule, then checks the next shared URL in server logs because robots compliance is not confirmed.
