Definition

Coding agent visibility is how often an AI coding agent recommends, installs or builds on your product when a user asks it to plan or build software. The main agents are Claude Code from Anthropic and Codex from OpenAI, and Cursor is often studied alongside them. They run in a developer's terminal or editor and act on the codebase directly, so a recommendation can turn into an install command in the same session.

It extends AI search visibility tracking to technical users who are choosing a stack. The measurement approach is the same as for chat models: run a set of prompts, then compare mentions, sentiment and competitors. Our guide on coding agent visibility frames it as four questions. Is your product in the plan? Is it the default or an alternative? Does the agent build a custom solution instead of using a vendor? How does it describe you?

Public studies suggest the picks are concentrated and agent-specific. Amplifying ran 2,430 open-ended prompts through Claude Code in February 2026 and found that in 12 of 20 tool categories the most common pick was a custom-built solution. Armature's September 2026 study of Claude Code, Codex and Cursor found the three chose the same tool in 42% of cases, and separated tools an agent mentioned from tools it selected. These are third-party studies with their own prompt sets, so treat the percentages as indicative.

What feeds a pick differs by agent. The inputs usually discussed are the model's training data, live web search, context in the project such as AGENTS.md files, and what the agent can run. Armature reported Codex used web search in 94% of sessions, while Claude Code searched in about 30% overall, which suggests Codex picks may react faster to new docs and comparisons. How AI coding agents choose SDKs goes deeper.

To improve it, make your product easy for an agent to use correctly: clear quickstarts, current docs, a published MCP server and llms.txt where useful, and examples that are easy to copy. Then track the prompts developers would ask and compare per agent. Agent analytics in Promptwatch covers the traffic side.

Examples of Coding Agent Visibility

  • A payments startup asks Claude Code to add subscription billing to a demo app and checks whether its SDK or a competitor's lands in package.json.
  • A database vendor tracks head-to-head prompts such as 'Should I use Postgres or MongoDB for this project? Pick one and scaffold it' across Claude Code and Codex.
  • An API company finds Claude Code often writes its own client instead of installing the SDK, and rewrites its quickstart so the SDK path is shorter than the custom one.
  • A developer tools team publishes an MCP server and adds prompts like 'connect my agent to a tool that has an MCP server for expenses' to its tracking set.

The method is the same, but the audience and moment differ. Developers use coding agents while building, so their prompts are technical and a recommendation can become an installed dependency. Chat models answer questions, while coding agents change the codebase.
