What is naverbot?

The lowercase naverbot token identifies a Naver crawler used to collect public web pages for Naver search. Naver's crawler is also associated with the name Yeti, so log rules that cover only naverbot may not account for every Naver crawler identity.

Its practical job is indexing. The crawler requests pages it can reach, and Naver can update its search index after a later visit. Naver Search Advisor also lets site owners submit sitemaps and RSS feeds, which is useful when changed pages have not yet been collected again.

In access logs, look at the requested paths, response codes, and visit frequency rather than treating the user-agent name as proof of origin. this bot does not provide an IP verification method, and any HTTP client can copy the naverbot string.

Nothing in the available documentation identifies naverbot as a model-training crawler. Allowing it can make eligible pages available to Naver's conventional web index. It does not guarantee placement in an AI answer, and blocking it should not be described as a general AI training opt-out.

Relevant for AI searchNaver

Is naverbot relevant for AI search?

Yes. naverbot feeds Naver, so the pages it can reach shape what those AI products say about you.

naverbot feeds a search index that also powers that engine's AI answer features and overviews. One crawl can serve a classic results page and a generated summary, so blocking it costs you both the rankings you would expect and a growing share of AI answers built on the same index.

How to handle naverbot

Allow naverbot on public pages if Naver search visibility matters to you. Use Naver Search Advisor and your access logs to check collection after publishing or changing a page. Keep account areas, private documents, and staging hosts behind authentication because robots.txt is not an access control.

To stop this token across the site, add this rule to robots.txt:

User-agent: naverbot
Disallow: /

The bot record says naverbot respects robots.txt, and Naver provides a robots rule validator. Recheck your logs after changing the file because the crawler must fetch the new rule before its behavior changes.

Examples

  • A Korean retailer submits an updated product sitemap in Naver Search Advisor, then checks for `naverbot` requests to the changed URLs.
  • A publisher allows article pages but disallows an internal preview directory that should never enter Naver's index.
  • A security analyst sees a client claiming to be `naverbot` and treats the label as unverified until the traffic pattern and source can be checked.
