Search Engine Crawler

What is Qwantbot?

Qwantbot crawls pages for Qwant's web index. Qwant uses that index to return ordinary web results alongside categories such as news, images, videos, and shopping. Inclusion starts with the crawler being able to retrieve the public page.

The complete user-agent changes with crawler version and may include a worker identifier. Qwantbot remains the stable name, while specialized requests can appear as names such as Qwantbot-news. That makes token matching more dependable than storing one complete header string.

Qwant says its crawler follows robots.txt. Genuine requests can be checked with reverse DNS ending in qwant.com, followed by a forward lookup to the original address. Qwant also publishes an IP list, but recommends DNS verification first and notes that the list can change.

The documented result of allowing Qwantbot is eligibility for Qwant's search index. Qwant does not document this crawler as a source for generated AI answers or model training. A Qwantbot visit should not be presented as evidence of either use.

Relevant for AI searchQwant

Is Qwantbot relevant for AI search?

Yes. Qwantbot feeds Qwant, so the pages it can reach shape what those AI products say about you.

Qwantbot feeds a search index that also powers that engine's AI answer features and overviews. One crawl can serve a classic results page and a generated summary, so blocking it costs you both the rankings you would expect and a growing share of AI answers built on the same index.

How to handle Qwantbot

Allow Qwantbot on canonical public pages if Qwant search traffic matters to the site. Blocking faceted URLs, internal search results, or duplicate print views can reduce waste without excluding the useful version of the content.

To block the crawler across the host, use its stable token:

User-agent: Qwantbot
Disallow: /

Qwant states that its crawler follows robots rules. Allow time for recrawling and index updates after changing a policy, and verify unexpected requests by DNS before creating an IP allowlist.

Examples

  • A French publisher sees `Qwantbot-news` revisit new articles and keeps its canonical news URLs available while excluding printer-friendly duplicates.
  • A network administrator receives a request claiming to be Qwantbot and confirms that reverse and forward DNS both resolve through Qwant before allowlisting it.
