What is SeekportBot?

SeekportBot builds the independent web index used by the Seekport search engine. SISTRIX has operated Seekport since December 2014, and the crawler lets that service find pages without relying on another major search provider's index.

Its workflow is conventional web search crawling: discover public URLs, fetch their content, and revisit them for index updates. A blocked page cannot be refreshed in Seekport, while a crawlable page is only eligible for indexing and is not guaranteed to rank.

SeekportBot identifies itself as Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; SeekportBot; +https://bot.seekport.com). The operator publishes an up-to-date list of crawler IP addresses and says the bot obeys both robots.txt and Crawl-delay. That list is the useful check when a matching user agent appears suspicious.

Seekport's bot page describes search indexing, not AI model training or generated answers. Allowing the crawler supports possible visibility in Seekport's standard results. No broader AI search benefit is established.

Relevant for AI search

Is SeekportBot relevant for AI search?

Yes. SeekportBot collects pages for an AI product, so what it can crawl influences how AI systems describe your brand.

SeekportBot feeds a search index that also powers that engine's AI answer features and overviews. One crawl can serve a classic results page and a generated summary, so blocking it costs you both the rankings you would expect and a growing share of AI answers built on the same index.

How to handle SeekportBot

Allow SeekportBot on pages you want considered for Seekport search. If the visit rate is the problem, set a Crawl-delay for SeekportBot; Seekport's own example uses a two-second pause. The operator notes that changes can take a while to register.

To block the crawler completely, use:

User-agent: SeekportBot
Disallow: /

Seekport explicitly documents compliance with that rule. If traffic continues, compare its source with the current IP list at bot.seekport.com before deciding that the crawler ignored the file.

Examples

  • A German publisher permits SeekportBot on news articles so Seekport can maintain an independent copy of its searchable metadata.
  • A low-capacity server adds a two-second crawl delay for SeekportBot instead of removing all of its pages from the index.
  • An administrator checks a request source against Seekport's published IP list before granting it an exception from bot mitigation.
