Branded vs. Unbranded Prompts

Branded prompts name your brand; unbranded prompts ask about a category or problem without it. Tracking them apart keeps brand recall from inflating visibility.

Definition

Branded prompts are questions to an AI assistant that name a specific brand or its products ('Is HubSpot good for startups?'), while unbranded prompts ask about a category, problem or use case without naming one ('best CRM for a 10-person agency'). The two answer different questions. Branded prompts test what a model knows and says about you; unbranded prompts test whether it brings you up when the person asking has not chosen yet.

The split comes from search marketing, where branded and non-branded keywords have long been reported separately. Google built it into Search Console with a branded queries filter announced on November 20, 2025 and available to all eligible sites since March 11, 2026. Google classifies queries with an AI-assisted system that also catches misspellings and products unique to the brand, and notes that branded queries typically bring higher-ranking pages and higher click-through rates, while non-branded queries show how new users find a site.

In AI visibility tracking, mixing the two distorts almost every metric. In a branded prompt your brand appears nearly by definition, so its mention rate approaches 100%. If half of a prompt set is branded, the blended mention rate sits around 50% before the model has recommended you to a single undecided buyer. Visibility scores and AI share of voice inflate the same way. Citations shift too: branded answers lean on the brand's own pages, which raises the self-citation rate, while category answers mostly cite third parties. Promptwatch's ChatGPT citation data by content type shows branded answers drawing heavily on product and landing pages, with reviews cited more often than across prompts overall.

Most tracking setups use three groups rather than two:

  • Branded (brand-specific): accuracy, sentiment and whether facts such as pricing, features and availability are right. Errors here are an AI hallucination problem you can often fix on your own site.
  • Unbranded (organic or category): discovery. Are you recommended, in what position, and which competitors appear instead?
  • Competitor comparison ('Slack vs. Microsoft Teams for a small startup'): positioning in head-to-head evaluations close to a purchase.

Prompts that name a competitor but not you, such as 'alternatives to Asana', are unbranded from your point of view and often among the most valuable discovery prompts to track. Branded and unbranded is also a different axis from search intent: an unbranded prompt can be informational ('how does a CRM work') or commercial ('best CRM for agencies').

To build the unbranded set, start from the language customers use: support tickets, sales calls, Reddit threads and review sites, plus competitor prompts where rivals appear and you do not (prompt research and how to find the right prompts to track cover the process). Label every prompt by type when you create it so each chart and export can be filtered, and report unbranded visibility as the headline discovery number. Keep a smaller branded set running to catch wrong facts and sentiment shifts, and read the two trends separately in your prompt monitoring.

Examples of Branded vs. Unbranded Prompts

  • A project management SaaS tracks 200 prompts, 80 of them branded. Its blended mention rate is 58%, but on the 120 unbranded prompts alone it is 31%, which becomes the number the team reports to leadership.
  • A retail bank finds ChatGPT quoting an overdraft fee it dropped a year ago in answers to 'What does [Bank] charge for an overdraft?'. The branded prompt exposes a factual error, and updating the fee page and its FAQ fixes it within weeks.
  • An outdoor gear retailer adds 30 'alternatives to [competitor]' prompts to its unbranded set and finds it is named in only 4 of them, compared with 22 of 30 for the market leader.
  • An agency reports a client's AI visibility in two lines: branded sentiment of 82 out of 100, and unbranded visibility that rose from 12% to 19% over the quarter after a comparison content push.
