The distinction in one line
A mention is your brand appearing in the text of an AI answer. A citation is a URL the AI attached to that answer as a source. One is about your brand being talked about, the other is about your content being used. This is the single most common confusion in AI visibility, so it’s worth being precise: the two are recorded independently, move independently, and improve through different work. What counts as a mention
A mention means the AI discussed your brand in the answer itself: named it in prose, listed it as an option, or compared it in a table. Each response counts as one mention per brand, no matter how many times the name appears, so the mention count reads as “the number of answers we appear in.” What does not count: your brand appearing only in a citation title, a URL, or a publisher name. If an answer about CRM tools cites “acme.com/blog/crm-guide” but never discusses Acme in the text, that is a citation for Acme, not a mention. The answer used Acme’s content without recommending Acme. Every mention also carries a visibility score, a position, and a sentiment score, so mentions feed most of the core metrics, including Share of Voice. What counts as a citation
A citation is a source the AI model attached to its answer: an inline reference, a footnote, or a source card. Promptwatch records each cited URL with its domain and its position among the answer’s sources. Citations only exist where the model actually searched the web. The live-search platforms, ChatGPT, AI Overview, AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, and Alexa, return sources with their answers. Models answering purely from training data usually cite nothing, so a response with zero citations is normal for those. The four combinations, and what each tells you
- Mentioned and cited: the strongest position. The AI recommends you and backs it with your content.
- Mentioned, not cited: the model knows your brand from its training data or third-party sources, but your own content isn’t doing the work. Common for well-known brands with weak content coverage.
- Cited, not mentioned: your page fed the answer, but your brand wasn’t part of it. Your content is useful to the model; your brand isn’t yet part of the recommendation. Frequent with informational blog content.
- Neither: the visibility gap. Start with the prompts where competitors get mentioned and you don’t.
Why the difference matters for strategy
Mentions and citations respond to different levers:- Mentions grow when models associate your brand with the category: brand presence across the web, reviews, comparisons, third-party coverage. It is reputation work.
- Citations grow when your pages are crawlable, structured, and directly answer the questions people ask: content work on your own domain. See how citations work in Promptwatch for reading the citation reports.
Where to see each
- Mentions: the Brand Visibility chart and the Responses tab, where each response row shows which brands appeared.
- Citations: the Citations section, which aggregates cited URLs and domains across your responses, with position and frequency.
