Why these two platforms matter
Every page an AI model cites gets classified by source type, and Reddit and YouTube are cited often enough to earn their own pages in the product. The strategic logic:- Models treat them as evidence of real opinion: a Reddit thread with hundreds of upvotes reads as social proof to a model assembling a recommendation, in a way a vendor landing page never will.
- They’re winnable: you can’t rewrite a competitor’s comparison post, but you can be present, honestly, in the communities and video content models keep citing.
- The alternative is being described by others: if your category’s answers are built from Reddit and YouTube and you’re absent there, models describe you entirely through what strangers say, or not at all.
Step 1: see what’s actually being cited
Open Socials in the sidebar, with a tab for each platform and a model filter and date range on top:- Reddit citations: every Reddit post cited in responses to your tracked prompts, with its subreddit, upvotes, comments, citation count, and average citation position. The subreddit column is the strategic one: it names the communities that feed models in your category.
- YouTube citations: the videos and channels models cite, with views, engagement, citation counts, and average position, which tells you the formats and creators the models trust.

Step 2: the Reddit program
Reddit rewards genuine participation and punishes marketing, both socially and through moderation. The program is presence, not promotion:- Prioritize the cited subreddits: the top subreddits in your citations view, not the biggest ones. A mid-size subreddit models keep citing beats a huge one they ignore.
- Participate before you’re needed: have team members with honest, disclosed accounts answer questions in their expertise, most of it not about your product. Accounts that only appear to self-promote get removed and discredit the brand.
- Show up where recommendations form: “best X for Y” and “alternatives to Z” threads are the ones models cite. Add your product where it genuinely fits, with the disclosure the subreddit’s rules require, and treat competitor mentions as fair.
- Watch the threads that already rank: cited posts change: they accumulate comments, get archived, sometimes deleted. A high-citation thread that misrepresents you is worth a polite correction while it’s still open.
- Mine it for prompts: recurring Reddit questions are how real buyers phrase your category, which makes them strong candidates for your tracked prompts.
Step 3: the YouTube program
The YouTube citations view tells you which channels and formats feed your category’s answers. Work both sides:- Own content for cited formats: if comparisons and tutorials dominate the citations, make yours, with clear titles and descriptions that match how buyers ask, since that text is what search and models index.
- Creator collaborations: channels that keep getting cited are ranked for you in the top channels list. A review on an already-cited channel inherits that channel’s citation gravity in a way a new channel can’t, which makes the list a vetted outreach queue for reviews and sponsorships.
- Fill uncovered questions: prompts whose answers cite thin or outdated videos are openings, a better video has a real chance to take the citation.

Step 4: measure the loop
Social presence work shows up in the data through several doors, so check more than one:- The Socials pages: are new posts and videos that involve you entering the cited set, and climbing in citation count and position?
- Offsite mentions: your brand appearing on cited news, blog, and review pages you don’t own. Reddit and YouTube are skipped on that page, so to see whether a cited thread or video names you, open it from Socials and read the post or video.
- Mentions and visibility: the end goal is models naming you in answers. Watch visibility on the prompts whose citations you targeted, filtered to the models that cite social sources most in your category.
